Walk for Young Readers

In a grassroots driven desire by LSC colleagues to raise money for a Canadian school library in need and to launch our new LSC Education Division, LSC staff organized a week-long Walk for Young Readers. The money raised will benefit the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation Public Library. The library is located in Waabgon Gaming, the local First Nation elementary school, and was built specifically as an addition to the school. The library is open is open five days a week, works in partnership, and shares space with the community literacy program.

Numerous LSC staff participated in the event. In particular, two of our professional librarians, Sara Foster and Darian Lajoie Paquette, along with our Customer Service manager, Amber Thody walked 24.1 km on September 23rd. They started from LSC in Kitchener and headed towards their home in London.

LSC raised $2,500 with the help of our staff and the support of various publishers. The Georgina Island Library will now be able to (with the assistance our Selections Services librarians) order books of their choice to supplement their existing collection.

We would like to thank everyone who participated. We look forward to next year’s challenge as we repeat our commitment to school libraries in Canada.

September 22nd-26th 2008

The Library Services Centre (LSC) will launch its new Education Division by holding a week-long Walk For Young Readers to benefit the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation Public Library, which is its island community’s only library.

The Chippewas of Georgina Island Public Library supports the elementary school program (JK to 5) with regular class visits, as well as educational and recreational resources.

It receives a very modest annual operating grant ($903) from the Ministry of Culture. Plans for Fall 2008 and Winter 2009 include a major weeding and rebuilding of the library’s children’s collection.
